Rapid vulnerability assessment and prioritization for seismic risk reduction of infrastructures in the province of Surigao del Norte

On 10 February 2017, a strong earthquake of magnitude 6.7 shook the island of Mindanao. The epicenter was located 16 km offshore northwest of Surigao City.

Several earthquakes followed afterwards that rocked the province of Surigao del Norte.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) of Caraga was worried that structural integrity of various infrastructures and public facilities in the area have been further compromised and they asked to the World Bank to hire international experts to assist them for evaluating and assessing the structural conditions of their infrastructures to ensure its capacity to withstand, mainly, seismic hazard.

The objective of the assignment, born as contract of assistance funded by the World Bank, was to support the regional and provincial governments in their capacity to implement seismic risk reduction evaluations in the provincial area affected by the earthquake.
